about me

I wanted to be a cinematographer.

I wanted to be a cinematographer.

Six years later I design products for a living. This is how that happened.

After my diploma I was shooting wildlife, and assisting a DOP on a television serial in Gujarat. That was the plan. Camera, light, framing, and the part of the day where you wait a long time for something to happen and then have four seconds to get it right.

Then the lockdown arrived and the work stopped. I started learning to code, mostly to have something to do with the time. Full stack, self-taught, badly at first.

What I found was that I cared enormously about what ended up on the screen and much less about what made it run. I wanted to be the person deciding what the thing should be. That turnedout to have a name.

I wanted to be the person deciding what the thing should be.

The first one came through a friend who ran a small studio, Alpha Ace Academy. He brought in the projects and I designed them. Almost two years of that, learning the work by doing it in front of clients rather than in a classroom.

Then ten months at Highway Delite, a product company, where I rebuilt their app end to end. One product for months at a stretch instead of a new one every few weeks, and the first time the thing I was designing already had people using it.

When the term ended I moved to Zazz, the agency I'm at now, and I'm back to a new product every few months. Marketplaces, scheduling, fitness, messaging, usually as the only designer on the project.

I still travel and still shoot. Not wildlife any more, though. That takes a kind of patience I don't currently have the hours for.
